The 12th ILO African Regional Meeting will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa on 11-14 October and will gather leaders, policy makers and experts from all 54 African countries to review progress made in achieving the targets set in the Decent Work Agenda for Africa 2007/2015.

An ILO High Level Mission to Greece has finished a full week of extensive meetings with all relevant actors of the country’s labour market. The mandate of the mission arose from complaints concerning the application of international conventions ratified by Greece in the areas of freedom of association, collective bargaining, wages, social security, employment policy, labour inspection and non-discrimination.

The slow-down in the global economy could result in a massive jobs shortfall among G20 members by next year, warns the International Labour Organization (ILO), in a joint study prepared with the OECD at the request of the G20 for its labour ministerial meeting in Paris on 26-27 September.

In a statement issued to the International Monetary Financial Committee and Development Committee, Mr Somavia warned that the world economy is again facing risks of a financial crisis and an economic recession which could further strain an already critical employment situation. He called for “decisive global cooperation” to tackle the massive jobs deficit and to avoid sliding into a possible recession.
