GENEVA (ILO news) – The ILO welcomes the strong support by the European Parliament for renewed efforts on ratification and implementation of ILO Conventions.
In a resolution adopted by a large majority on Thursday Nov.26, the European parliament showed its firm commitment in favour of a strong role of the EU in promoting a fair globalization with decent work for all, inside and outside the EU.
This resolution comes days before the entry into force of the EU Lisbon treaty on 1st December 2009 that has adapted the functioning of the EU. It calls on EU Member States, on the European Commission and on the President elect of the European Council for renewed efforts on ratification and implementation of ILO Conventions classified by ILO as up to date.
The resolution includes a call on the newly appointed President elect of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, to be as ambitious as possible within his mandate to encourage Member States to ratify and implement the ILO Conventions.
It also calls on the European Commission to consider the adoption of a recommendation to the Member States to encourage the ratification of the Conventions that have been classified by the ILO as up to date and to actively contribute to their implementation.
The Resolution highlights the fundamental values of freedom, human dignity, social justice, social security and equality as essential elements of sustainable economic and social development. The European Parliament underlines that these principles are even more relevant in the context of the current global economic and jobs crisis, and makes specific reference to the ILO 2008 Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization and to the 2009 ILO Global Jobs Pact.
The ILO is convinced that the combined efforts of the EU Member states and the EU institutions, taking into account the respective competences, , can very much facilitate the ratification and implementation of ILO Conventions both in the EU and throughout the world.
