GENEVA (ILO News) - Methods of improving the livelihoods, well-being and empowerment of poor, working people will be at the centre of an ILO-sponsored workshop entitled Including the Excluded in the World Economy organized on the occasion of the Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly (Copenhagen +5).
The workshop will be held on Friday 30 June from 09:00 to 11:00 hours at the ILO headquarters in Room II (R3 - South). Journalists are welcome.
Panellists in the workshop include:
- Mr. Juan Somavia, Director-General of the ILO, who will act as moderator;
- Mr. Muhammad Yunus, Managing Director of the Grameen Bank (Bangladesh);
- Ms. Hazel Henderson, writer and activist (United States);
- Mr. Hernando de Soto, President of the Instituto de Libertad y Democracia (Peru);
- Ms. Renana Jhabvala, National Coordinator for the Self-employed Women's Association (India).
The workshop panellists will discuss approaches and policies for the broader sharing of the prosperity engendered by globalization. Specific themes will include the use of new technologies, innovative ways of mobilizing global finance, utilizing the potential of the informal sector and organizing women workers in the informal sector. Each speaker will be given 15-20 minutes to make his or her presentation, followed by a discussion/debate with other workshop participants. The event is being organized as part of the ILO's contribution to the Geneva 2000 Forum.
