GENEVA (ILO News) - Their Majesties King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía of Spain will attend a special Session at the International Labour Organization (ILO) on Tuesday, March 8, to commemorate 10 years of cooperation between Spain and the ILO International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC).

The King and Queen will be welcomed by ILO Director-General Juan Somavia at the ILO headquarters in Geneva where the Special Session will be held at 10:30 local time (09:30 GMT).

The current chairman of the Governing Body, Philippe Séguin, will chair the Special Session that will be attended by government, employer and worker representatives from ILO member States, members of the Geneva international community, and Geneva local authorities.

The visit of the King and Queen of Spain to the ILO will be part of a wider visit to international organizations with headquarters in Geneva.

In 1995 Spain became one of the first countries to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the ILO to support the International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC).

The ILO estimates that some 246 million children are currently involved in child labour worldwide. Of these, 179 million - or one in every eight children worldwide - are exposed to the worst forms of child labour, which endanger their physical, mental or moral well-being.
