    The global economic crisis is expected to lead to a dramatic increase in the number of people joining the ranks of the unemployed, working poor and those in vulnerable employment, the International Labour Office (ILO) says in its annual Global Employment Trends report (GET).

    International Labour Office statement on humanitarian situation in Gaza

    The International Labour Office is deeply concerned by the rising humanitarian impact of the escalating conflict situation in Gaza. In line with its mandate in the world of work, the ILO focuses on the plight of workers and their families, who have lived through the hardships of long months of closures and are now exposed to the devastation of a war situation. Even before the turmoil of recent days, Gaza had the highest unemployment rate in the world.

    ILO, China launch first HIV/AIDS prevention campaign for internal rural migrant workers

    The 200 million internal migrant workers in China play a vital role in the country’s mining, construction, and transportation sectors. But the lack of awareness about HIV puts them at risk of contracting the disease. Last November, the ILO and China’s State Council AIDS Committee Office jointly launched the country’s first HIV/AIDS prevention campaign for internal rural migrant workers.     At 16 per cent, the region of Chernivtsi in Ukraine has the highest unemployment rate in the country and the lowest number of women employed. This is why the region was chosen for an ILO project, funded by Development Cooperation Ireland, that addresses the root causes of labour migration and tries to stem irregular migration and trafficking through training, job placement and entrepreneurial activities.     Migrants in times of economic crisis: ILO/UNDP join forces to make Tajik migration safe

    Tajikistan is the poorest of the Central Asian republics and a huge supplier of migrants: 800 000 of its 7 million inhabitants, most of them men, are working abroad. While many migrants are already at risk of all kinds of abuse, they may also become the first victims of the current financial and economic crisis. ILO and UNDP have joined forces to empower migrant communities and make migration safe. Olga Bogdanova from the ILO Moscow office reports from the Tajik capital Dushanbe.

    Belgium continues partnership with ILO to extend social security and promote social dialogue

    On 9 December 2008, the Minister of Development Cooperation of Belgium, Mr. Charles Michel, signed an agreement with the International Labour Office (ILO) for a new grant of €6 million and €2.4 respectively to extend social security to vulnerable populations and promote social dialogue in French-speaking Africa.

    Brazil becomes first donor country from the South to ILO’s Regular Budget Supplementary Account

    The Government of the Federal Republic of Brazil will contribute US$ 300,000 to the ILO’s Regular Budget Supplementary Account (RBSA), becoming the first donor country from the South to do so. Brazil's contribution will support field programmes in Latin America and the Caribbean promoting fundamental principles and rights at work.
