International Women's Day

Female unemployment reached 9.8 per cent in Latin America and the Caribbean

Deteriorating working conditions particularly affect women in the labour market. In an article released this week on the occasion of International Women's Day, José Manuel Salazar, ILO Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean insists on the need to promote employment equality in the region.

Press release | 06 March 2017
LIMA, Peru (ILO News) – In 2016, women's unemployment in Latin America and the Caribbean increased more than men's, and for the first time in a decade, the rate reaching 9.8 per cent was close to the double digit level, the Director of the ILO’s Regional Office said, calling for persistent efforts to bring more equality to labour markets.

"We cannot lower our guard," Salazar said in an article released this week on the occasion of International Women's Day. According to the ILO representative, the less favourable data for women in the labour market - affected by slow growth and in some cases economic contraction – justified a “call for action”.

With an estimated female labour force of 126 million in the region, the current unemployment rate meant “that there are about 12 million women who are looking for a job but cannot find it."
