GENEVA (ILO News) – The Director General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) has expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the recent earthquake in China.
“We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and solidarity with all those affected by the devastating earthquake in Qinghai province. The ILO offices in the region stand ready to work together with the national authorities to assist families and communities in rehabilitating the region, rebuilding lives and restoring hope”, said ILO Director General Juan Somavia in a statement.
“We will work with all our partners at the national and local levels to ensure that the humanitarian and reconstruction efforts now underway are integrated with strategies to promote employment and to restore livelihoods. We hope in this way to minimize the negative social and economic impacts of the disaster on families’ lives and to contribute to a speedy recovery”, Mr Somavia added.
The ILO has a long-standing presence in China, where it works with the tripartite constituents on a wide range of social and labour issues, including international labour standards, labour market policies, gender equality, youth employment, occupational safety and health, social security and industrial relations. In 2008, following the enormous loss of life and livelihoods due to the Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan Province, the ILO worked with the authorities to help working people and small businesses recover from their devastating losses.
