ILO News - Monday 9 June - The Director of the International Labour Standards Department and the Legal Adviser received ratifications of the 1997 Instrument of Amendment to the Constitution of the ILO and of International Labour Conventions.

The ceremony was attended by high officials depositing the instruments of ratification as well as by other interested authorities and ILO officials.

The holding of this event has been decided by the Governing Body during its 300th session (November 2007) in the framework of the campaign for the ratification of the 1997 Instrument of Amendment to the Constitution of the ILO, in order to have member States ratifying such Amendment and International Labour Conventions publicly recognized.

The 1997 Instrument of Amendment to the ILO Constitution, which is accompanied by strong tripartite guarantees, would empower the Conference to abrogate (i.e. to terminate for the ILO) an obsolete ILO Convention. The Amendment still needs 17 additional ratifications or acceptances to enter into force.
