   Labour administration and inspection key to good global governance

   The importance of strong and effective labour administration and labour inspection systems in the context of economic and social development is recognised in the Constitution of the ILO, the Declaration of Philadelphia and the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization. The same principles have been further developed by numerous ILO Conventions, Recommendations and other instruments.    More than 300 senior representatives of seafarers and shipowners, along with governments, are to meet in Geneva between 15 and 26 September to discuss guidelines on flag-state and port-state inspection on board of ships under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) adopted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2006.    Combating child labour: Lessons from the Turkish labour inspection experience

   Over the last two years, more than 4,000 children and youth in three Turkish provinces have been withdrawn or prevented from entering the worst forms of child labour thanks to a labour inspection project launched by the ILO's International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC). Now, IPEC partners in South Eastern Europe and Central Asia are seeking ways of sharing what they learned more widely.

   Occupational safety and health in Kazakhstan: A model for Central Asia

   After the collapse of the Soviet Union, working conditions in Kazakhstan deteriorated much the same way as in other former Soviet republics. In the 1990s, more than 3,000 occupational accidents were registered officially each year, causing the death of more than 300 workers.
