For working women in Pakistan, the bus ride to work can be particularly uncomfortable. The country’s National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP) has been trying to change that, with a bit of help from the ILO.

In a number of countries, HIV prevalence is higher among road transport workers than in the general population. To respond to the challenge of HIV/AIDS in the sector, workers’ and employers’ representatives from around the world will meet in Geneva on World AIDS Day, 1 December, for a training and learning event. An ever increasing demand for international road transport has brought up new and difficult challenges for the road transport sector, including excessive border delays, inefficient or corrupt border control officers and drivers' vulnerability to sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. A new ILO report prepared for a forthcoming tripartite meeting at the ILO in Geneva examines socially responsible solutions to these problems.
