    Building Haiti through training and employability programmes

    As a reaction to the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010, the international community has pledged multi-billion US$ support programmes. However, the country will only be able to harvest this massive support if it finds qualified professional and technical staff for implementation. ILO Online spoke with Michael Axmann, a senior ILO skills development specialist, about a new ILO proposal for a large-scale training and employment programme to strengthen employability of Haitian workers and productivity of Haitian enterprises.

    HIV/AIDS training in Russia: “To know means to live”

    The 100th Session of the International Labour Conference also marks one year since the adoption of ILO Recommendation No. 200 – the first international human rights instrument to focus specifically on the issue of HIV/AIDS in the world of work. The Recommendation aims to strengthen the contribution of the world of work to universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support and contains provisions on potentially life-saving prevention programmes for all groups of workers, including young workers and persons in training. This story is about "Your Health" – an innovative training course for vocational schools in Russia.

    The ILO estimates that unemployment is up by more than 30 million worldwide since 2007. The number of unemployed youth increased by 8.5 million between 2008 and 2009, the largest year-on-year increase in at least ten years. Against this sombre economic background, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) systems worldwide are under pressure to deal with a host of employment and workplace challenges. Interview with ILO specialists about how TVET systems can respond to these challenges.
