In an address to a Special Focus discussion on Women at the 12th ILO African Regional Meeting, The First Lady of the Republic of Zambia urged African countries to rapidly ratify the Maternity Protection Convention (183) of the International Labour Organization to speed up women’s social and economic empowerment in the region.

According to a 2010 report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Africa faces the huge challenge of creating 100 million productive jobs by 2015 in order to reduce the number of working poor. Participants to the first special debate of the ILO’s African Regional Meeting on efficient growth, employment and decent work in Africa called for new ways of thinking in order to realize an inclusive job-rich growth in Africa.
