    Thailand: a healthy society is a productive society

    In the ongoing global economic crisis, the need for a "social protection floor" giving everyone access to basic social rights, services and facilities is even more urgent. The tripartite constituents at the ILO's 2012 International Labour Conference are discussing a set of guidelines for building social protection floors. But individual countries are already proving it can work. Thailand's universal health care scheme is based on the idea that only a healthy society can be a productive society.

    Inequities in health care access in the European region

    The objective of providing universal health coverage is high on the agenda of countries in the broader European region, yet vulnerable groups often do not have full access to health services, according to Dr. Xenia Scheil-Adlung, Health Policy Coordinator at the ILO’s Social Security Department. ILO Online spoke to Dr. Scheil-Adlung, who has published a study looking at the situation in the region, which includes the European Union, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Central and Eastern Europe.

    World Water Day (22 March 2011) - Bringing safe water to communities: the role of the ILO

    Despite the UN General Assembly declaring that access to safe water is a human right, thousands die each day because of water-related diseases, and many countries are not expected to meet the UN Millennium Development Goals on water. The ILO is working with governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations to identify priorities for investment infrastructure in order to create employment opportunities and bring safe water to communities. In advance of World Water Day on 22 March, ILO Online spoke with Carlos R. Carrión-Crespo, ILO Sectoral Specialist for Public Services and Utilities.

    Joint ILO-WHO-UNAIDS Policy Guidelines on Improving Health Workers' Access to HIV and TB Prevention: Press Conference

    Dr. Sophia Kisting, Director of the ILO Programme on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work, Ms. Elizabeth Tinoco, Director of the ILO Sectoral Activities Department and Ms. Susan Wilburn, from the WHO Occupational & Environmental Health Department, launched the Joint ILO-WHO-UNAIDS Policy Guidelines on Improving Health Workers' Access to HIV and TB Prevention, at a press conference in Geneva. The new guidelines are designed to help national health systems protect health workers who are too often exposed to hazards of infection in their workplace.

    Since the influenza A(H1N1) outbreak has been announced 53 countries have officially reported 1reported 15,510 cases of human infection including 99 deaths (as of 06:00 GMT, 29 May 2009). The speed with which the outbreak has spread and the risk of a pandemic certainly merit the implementation of all measures necessary to protect the health of the world’s population.
