   Malawi: Businesswomen on Board with HIV/AIDS Message

   It’s tough to be an entrepreneur; it’s a lot tougher when you’re a woman from a low income background, running a small scale enterprise across international borders. But in Malawi the challenges for pioneering women entrepreneurs also include the risk of HIV infection. That’s why a local business association is welcoming a new initiative to educate entrepreneurs how to protect themselves. And the classroom is an unconventional one; on board the bus to buy goods across the border in Tanzania.

   Lebanon's First Woman Electrician

   In 2006 war devastated areas of Southern Lebanon. In recent years, the pace of reconstruction has been enhanced by a new program that trains young people at risk for long term unemployment in job skills in the building and construction industries. One of the brightest prospects from the new program is also one of the most unlikely; she’s on track to become southern Lebanon’s first woman electrician.

   India: Finding a Voice in the Silk Industry

   When families have no source of immediate income, often the only answer the families seem to have is sending their children to work. And just as the parents themselves were sent to work when they were young, the plague of child labour passes on from one generation to another. But in India’s silk industry, now it is the mothers who are breaking the cycle of child labour. At the same time, thanks to a remarkably successful initiative, the mothers of the silk industry are finding their own voices; in their families, in their communities, and in changing society for the better.

   From entrepreneurship to education: how empowering women can help their children learn

   Women’s entrepreneurship helps reduce poverty, promote gender equality and empower women. But it has another impact – providing women with the means to improve the health of their families and finance the education of their children. Two ILO projects in Africa funded by Irish AID are showing how learning business knowledge and skills not only creates jobs, but also extends empowerment to the future, promotes decent work and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
