Aung San Suu Kyi called for international aid and investment to promote economic progress in Myanmar and in particular focussed attention on the problem of youth unemployment. Highlighting the potential of her country both in terms of its natural and human resources, she noted, "it is not so much joblessness as hopelessness that threatens our future. The Nobel laureate made her landmark address to a packed Assembly Hall at the 101st session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

Stating they are "cautiously optimistic", the member states of the International Labour Organization have agreed to lift or suspend key restrictions on the ILO's work in Myanmar. Following a vote in the ILC plenary session in Geneva, the ILO agreed to lift restrictions which excluded the Government of Myanmar from receiving ILO technical cooperation and assistance. It also suspends for one year an ILO request of its members to review their relationships with Myanmar to ensure forced labour is not being used in those relationships. Under the agreement announced at the ILC, representatives of Myanmar can also now attend most ILO meetings, symposia and seminars.

Better Work, the unique partnership programme of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), organized the first-ever international buyers forum in Haiti recently as part of a new project that is expected to create jobs and promote sustainable development and responsible labour practices in the countrys garment industry. Speaking at the forum was Ros Harvey, ILO's Global Programme Manager for Better Work. At a separate event for international business leaders sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), former US President Bill Clinton, UN special envoy to Haiti discussed what the Better Work programme could bring to the Haitian garment industry.

The government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, represented by its ministry in charge of development cooperation, and the International Labour Organization (ILO) have signed a long-term general framework agreement to promote the ILO’s Decent Work Agenda and finance ILO projects and programmes in different countries.

In December 2001 Argentina was thrown into the worst financial crisis of its history. In response to the massive unemployment that ensued, the International Labour Organization, with funding from Italian Cooperation, is working with the Argentine government to adapt job training to meet the needs of emerging sectors, like Argentina’s tourism industry.
