The urban unemployment rate in Latin America and the Caribbean continued to fall in 2011, reaching a historic low of 6.8 per cent, announced the International Labour Organization (ILO) today, as it presented the latest version of its annual report, Labour Overview, in which it also warns of the need to address the challenges of improving job quality.

The massive and irreversible inclusion of Latin American and Caribbean women in the workforce has highlighted the challenges of traditional interplay between work and family life. Responding to these tensions is an essential step towards gender equality and for more productive economies, says a joint report from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Every year nearly 400,000 domestic workers leave Indonesia to work abroad. For most the experience is positive, allowing them to earn many times what they would earn at home. Hidden from public view in private homes however, domestic workers can be targets of exploitation and abuse as ILO TV reports.

Every year, some 100 million people worldwide are forced into poverty by health care costs. Last week, more than 200 participants from 40 countries attending the "International Conference on Social Health Insurance in Developing Countries" in Berlin discussed how people can best be protected against financial shocks deriving from illness. It was the first international meeting organized by the ILO, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the German development agency, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), following a 2004 agreement on common activities in the field of social protection.
