Indonesia’s law states that disabled people must make up at least one per cent of a company’s workforce. As some garment factories employ over 100,000 people, the challenge is not an easy one. But now the law has found a new ally.

Lingering stereotypes and perceptions often means people with disabilities have little chance of finding a job, no matter what their skills may be. But there is a new ILO Finnish-funded project in Armenia called “From Crisis towards Decent and Safe Jobs” that is breaking down the barriers keeping people with disabilities out of the workforce.

After the break up of the Soviet Union, life for many people in Armenia changed radically and new opportunities opened up for many. But for people with disabilities, it was not the case. During the Soviet period, they found work inside a closed system of “social enterprises.” Now they are truly “invisible” in the workforce. The ILO’s pilot project in Armenia is breaking down old stereotypes about disability as well as the barriers that keep them from work.

Employers want to find the best talent, create a positive workplace and contribute to the communities in which they operate. Recruiting people with disabilities into the workplace and retaining those who become disabled while employed can help companies reach these goals. They are doing that with the help of the ILO’s Global Business and Disability Network.

The ILO has taken a major step toward promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace with the launch of a pioneering new global knowledge sharing platform linking scores of multinational enterprises and organizations representing employers and networks of people with disabilities.

December 3rd is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. To mark the date, the ILO has developed an online version of the ILO Disability Inclusion Toolkit and Manual – a collection of tools and information resources – to assist ILO staff in including disabled people in their areas of work. “Disability inclusion is everybody’s work!” ILO interviews Debra Perry, Senior Disability Technical Specialist and editor of the resource manual.
