   The global jobs crisis is taking a heavy toll on young people in the advanced economies of Europe where 1 in five are out of work, but in the developing world the situation is much more severe. Two out of three young people in developing countries are either unemployed or trying to survive day to day in low paying, irregular jobs. There is an urgent need for training and education programs that prepare young people with the skills employers are looking for.

   During his speech delivery today at the ILO conference in Geneva, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Michael Chilufya announced his plans to make a real economic impact through enhanced dialogue with key partners to get the right policies in place. He committed to uplifting youth and other vulnerable groups and achieve higher and more sustainable economic growth, regardless of diverse and regional situations.

   ILO and EU to launch new project on improving safety and health at work

   Responding to a pressing need to improve the safety and health of workers, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the European Union are launching a new project aimed at reducing occupational accidents and diseases in six countries in Eastern Europe (Ukraine and Moldova), Africa (Zambia and Malawi) and Central America (Honduras and Nicaragua).

   Forced labour is a crime that requires severe punishment. But clear guidance is needed, to determine the often thin dividing line between labour exploitation and forced labour. Zambia is one of the African countries to have taken steps both to understand the problems through research and to instigate measures to combat them. The case illustrates some of the dilemmas.
