   Statistical studies of the job market and the workforce not only help governments find out more about the current “state of the nation” - they are key tools in deciding appropriate policies to create job opportunities and enhance prosperity. While common in Europe and North America, accurate labour statistics are hard to come by in developing countries. But that’s just changed in Liberia, a country particularly hard hit by past conflict and poverty. And the results are pointing the way to job creation and to an improved quality of life for everyone.

   Liberia’s 14 year war left gaping holes in the infrastructure critical to investment and recovery and delayed a generation of youth from entering the labour market. Today, almost two-thirds of the population live in poverty. Youth between ages of 15 and 35 make up 53 per cent of the workforce, yet constitute 58 per cent of the unemployed. The integration of young people into the labour market is critical for overall economic development and in securing stability in a post-conflict country like Liberia. ILO Online asked Yukiko Arai, senior specialist in the ILO’s Multinational Enterprises Programme, how multinational enterprises (MNEs) can contribute to the generation of more quality jobs for local youth.

   Road-Building for a New Liberia

   After years of conflict, Liberia is on a new path to recovery. A wide array of multi-lateral agencies, including the International Labour Organization are on the scene to help. These efforts include the building of a road, which will link villages in Mount Barclay to the main market town. Not only will this stimulate the local agricultural economy, the labour-based construction method is also creating much needed jobs, as ILO TV reports.

   Promoting rural jobs to reduce poverty - an interview with Michael Henriques

   With three quarters of the world's poor living in rural areas, strategies to promote rural jobs are key to achieving the Millennium Development Goals of reducing poverty and hunger by 50 per cent before the year 2015. "Rural labour markets have changed," says Michael Henriques, Director of the ILO's Job Creation and Enterprise Development Department in an interview with ILO TV. "Globalization has had a major impact on the conditions of rural areas. The benefits of globalization are not spread equally." Delegates at the 97th International Labour Conference will discuss the promotion of rural employment for poverty reduction and produce a plan of action for the ILO to implement.
