The ILO, through the Joint Program for strengthening the Banana value chain by Growing Inclusive Markets, invited a delegation of fifteen technicians and producers of bananas from the Dominican Republic to visit Costa Rica to learn about the experience of this country's banana sector in plastic recycling as well as environmental and labor practices.
Social Entrepreneurship Award 2009

Last month, the Salvadoran NGO Agape was awarded the Social Entrepreneurship Award 2009 for Central America, Panama and the Dominican Republic. The prize, presented by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, recognizes Agape’s contribution to improving the lives of thousands of poor Salvadorans as well as its leadership and innovation in applying a successful business model.

Before the launch in 2002 of the Dominican Republic National Time Bound Programme supported by the ILO’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC), school attendance would drop by 50% during the four months children went to work in the fields in Azua province which produces around two-thirds of the country’s tomatoes production. With 75% of the population living in poverty, the province is a top priority for national social policy.
