Young people have been disproportionately affected by the global crisis that broke out in the autumn of 2008. This trend has exacerbated earlier challenges and there is concern that unless action is taken, the situation of youth will become unsustainable, putting social cohesion at threat. Ensuring a basic level of social protection and a decent life for all is the main goal of the UN Social Protection Floor Initiative. Many developing countries have already successfully taken measures supported by the Initiative and the ILO as one of its lead agencies. Other countries recently committed to start building their own Social Protection Floors. At the 99th International Labour Conference representatives from Brazil, Argentina, India, South Africa shared their experiences, highlighting the key factors of success as well as the positive impact on national social and economic development.
