    Decent work and education: A win-win combination

    In 2003, Argentina became one the first countries to incorporate the concept of Decent Work to its national development agenda. Since then, a number of government programmes have put into practice different aspects of the Decent Work Agenda. In 2004, Argentina and the ILO teamed up to launch the Building a Future with Decent Work project, which aims to promote and develop the dignity of work in each person. As ILO News explains, this a road that begins in the primary years at school.

    Harvest Gardens in Argentina

    The area around Salta, in northwest Argentina, is a rich tobacco growing region, but for many of the local people, working in the tobacco fields is the only way to support a family. In the harvest season entire families worked in the tobacco fields, putting young children at the risk of child labour. But thanks to changing technology and a unique program for children implemented by the government and employers with support from the ILO, the long tradition of child labour in Salta is finally part of the past.

    ILO presents Global Jobs Pact in Argentina

    At a tripartite meeting on the application in Argentina of the recommendations of the Global Jobs Pact, the ILO reported today that the urban unemployment rate in Latin America and the Caribbean is back to its pre-crisis level of 7.3 per cent.

    With the launch of the ILO's World Social Security Report 2010, ILO TV interviews Michael Cichon, Director of the ILO Social Security Department. The report examines the current state of social security across the world and the positive impact that a social protection floor can have as a social and economic stabilizer, particularly in times of crisis. Michael Cichon argues that all countries can put some basic social protection measures in place. "We have a saying in the social security department: there is nobody too poor to share," he says.

A new report from the ILO found that’s because Argentina learned some lessons from a bitter experience in the past, and protected jobs when hard times came around again.

    Success Stories on Social Protection

    Ensuring a basic level of social protection and a decent life for all is the main goal of the UN Social Protection Floor Initiative. Many developing countries have already successfully taken measures supported by the Initiative and the ILO as one of its lead agencies. Other countries recently committed to start building their own Social Protection Floors. At the 99th International Labour Conference representatives from Brazil, Argentina, India, South Africa shared their experiences, highlighting the key factors of success as well as the positive impact on national social and economic development.
