The global economy is recovering but according to a report from the ILO, a labour market recession looms on the horizon if measures are not taken to ensure a job-rich recovery and a more equitable distribution of the gains from economic growth.

More than 90 per cent of all jobs created in Africa are in the informal sector, many of them in small open-air workshops. In Kenya, this kind of business is known as jua kali, or “fierce sun” and now well-established employers are working together with the ILO to link up with the informal sector to raise quality and working conditions.

World sportswear giant Adidas has been working with the PT Dada factory in Indonesia amid concern about conditions in Asian garment factories in the face of increasing globalization. The company is working with the International Labour Organization to improve working conditions in the factory has become a model in the region of good labour-management relations.
