Marion Jansen on Trade and Employment in the Global Crisis

An ILO study on “Trade and Employment in the Global Crisis” was launched at an ILO discussion on “Globalization and Employment: Global Shocks, Structural Change and Policy Response”. Marion Jansen, co-ordinator of the ILO’s Trade and Employment Programme and co-author of the report, discusses how cross-border trade has acted as a transmission channel of the crisis to export-oriented economies, consequently affecting employment, and the effect of policy responses during the crisis on trade and employment.

Canada Ratifies Maritime Labour Convention

ILO TV interviews Cleopatra Doumbia- Henry, Director of the International Labour Standards Department about Canada's ratification of the ILO Maritime Labour Convention. "It demonstrates a re-engagement by Canada with international labour standards and it's the first convention ratified by Canada in ten years," says Ms. Doumbia-Henry. The labour standard, sometimes called the “super convention” because of its scope for protecting the working conditions of seafarers, was adopted by the 94th International Labour Conference in Geneva in February 2006.

On the Horizon: An International Labour Standard for Domestic Workers

The June 2010 session of the International Labour Conference held a first discussion on a new international labour standard for domestic workers. ILO TV interviews Manuela Tomei, Director of the ILO's Conditions of Work and Employment Programme about the need to protect the working rights of domestic workers. Delegates will vote on this new labour standard at the 100th International Labour Conference in June 2011.

ILO TV interviews delegates participating in the Committee for HIV/AIDS at the 99th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva from 2-18 June 2010. The committee members discussed a proposed new labour standard on HIV/AIDS in the world of work, which was adopted by delegates at the end of the conference. The standard contains provisions on prevention programmes and anti-discrimination measures at national and workplace levels aimed at strengthening the contribution of the world of work to universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.
