    A new book by the International Labour Organization looks at "remote work," the offshoring and outsourcing of business services from developed to developing countries using information and communications technologies. According to Jon Messenger, Senior Researcher with the Conditions of Work and Employment Programme of the ILO and co-editor of the study with Naj Ghosheh, “A lot has been written about this phenomenon and its implications for economic growth and employment. However, very little is known about the working conditions in this rapidly growing industry worth an approximate US$ 90 billion".

    Combatting Child Labour in Thailand

    In Thailand, the incidence of Thai children in child labour has been decreasing for several years. However the problem of child labour has not disappeared. Migrant children from neighbouring countries are now disproportionately found in child labour in various provinces of Thailand. A four year ILO-IPEC Project of Support for National Action to Combat Child Labour and its Worst Forms in Thailand has been addressing the underlying issues and promoting a variety of responses.

Marion Jansen, co-ordinator of the ILO’s Trade and Employment Programme and co-author of the report, discusses how cross-border trade has acted as a transmission channel of the crisis to export-oriented economies, consequently affecting employment, and the effect of policy responses during the crisis on trade and employment.

    Canada Ratifies Maritime Labour Convention

    ILO TV interviews Cleopatra Doumbia- Henry, Director of the International Labour Standards Department about Canada's ratification of the ILO Maritime Labour Convention. "It demonstrates a re-engagement by Canada with international labour standards and it's the first convention ratified by Canada in ten years," says Ms. Doumbia-Henry. The labour standard, sometimes called the “super convention” because of its scope for protecting the working conditions of seafarers, was adopted by the 94th International Labour Conference in Geneva in February 2006.
