The ILO inaugurated the Youth Employment Forum which brought together more than 100 young people from around the world for a wide-ranging discussion on how to best tackle the youth employment crisis. Watch the video highlights of the first day.

José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Director of the ILO Employment Sector, warns that the situation that young people face in the labour market has not improved and it is not likely to ease anytime soon. Medium term projections up to 2016 suggest little improvement in youth labour markets.

In a press conference held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Raymond Torres, Director of the ILO's International Institute for Labour Studies and lead author of the World of Work Report 2012, presented key findings of the Report, which projects a grim picture for global employment.

Speaking at the panel on “Averting a lost generation” during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr. Somavia said the youth employment crisis had reached unprecedented and intolerable dimensions, with four out of 10 unemployed in the world being either a young woman or man.
