00:03 – 00:29

Guy Ryder, ILO Director-General (in English) :

“We are seeing transformative change in the world of work, produced by technological innovation, by demographics, by globalization, by climate change.  And I think that this is giving rise to a great deal of uncertainty in the minds of people who want to see a secure and a decent future for themselves in the world of work, and are looking for answers about how our policies, how our institutions are going to create opportunities for decent work.”

00:29 – 00:44

Guy Ryder, ILO Director-General (in English) :

“The future is not decided for us.  The future is the future of work that we will make.  And that means that we need to think very carefully about our policies, about our institutions, and design that future that we all want.  And we hope that the Commission can help that process forward.”

00:44 – 00:56

Ameenah Gurib Fakim, President of Mauritius (in English) :

“As government, and as policy makers, and as many actors are going to be of course commissioners on this panel, we are taking this very very seriously, because it matters for our youth, it matters for our societies.”

00:56 – 01:20

Stefan Löfven, Prime Minister of Sweden (in English) :

“We today have a globalized economy, that doesn’t work for everybody.  Not everybody is included.   And we need to make sure that everybody is included.  Otherwise we will have extremism and populism, and that will also affect our society.  So this is a win-win-win for employers, for employees, for the societies.  And that is also why it’s so important that the ILO is the forum for this discussion.”

01:20 – 01:31

Guy Ryder, ILO Director-General (in English) :

“We all know that work is going to be done differently.  It is going to be different.  Preparing people for change, steering and managing that change, I think is what the Commission needs to engage in.  And that is our ambition.”

01:31 – 01:59

Ameenah Gurib Fakim, President of Mauritius (in English) :

“I strongly encourage all countries and stakeholders to come up with comprehensive recommendations and novel ideas on how to address the opportunities and challenges of the future of work.  We can accomplish this by “putting people first”, by recognising that labour is more than simply a commodity in the labour market - in the spirit of the ILO Constitution - or even just a factor of production.”

01:59 – 02:25

Stefan Löfven, Prime Minister of Sweden (in English) :

“We cannot stop development, nor should we even try.  So what we need is to come together: to harness innovation, to improve the daily lives of millions, to use new technology to build cleaner and more sustainable societies, and at the same time create new jobs, with better conditions for everyone.  These objectives lie at the heart of this Commission.”

02:25 – 02:38

Guy Ryder, ILO Director-General (in English) :

“And ladies and gentlemen, this is precisely where the Commission on the Future of Work comes in: to identify the key world of work challenges of our time and what we must do to meet them.”
