ILO contribution to South-South cooperation for development
The ILO Solution Forum held during the Global South-South Development EXPO2014 shed light on Sustainable Development practices and Decent Work through South-South and triangular cooperation in the framework of the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Here are some examples of how South-South cooperation supports good practices and scalable solutions related to social protection floors, the eradication of child labour, the social and solidarity economy, and fragile States.
South-South cooperation in action
The project “South-South Cooperation for the implementation of gender-sensitive Social Protection Floors at country level” provides country-tailored support by facilitating cooperation between countries of the South that have acquired expertise in developing gender-sensitive social protection floors, and countries that are currently seeking assistance in reforming, designing or implementing social protection policies.
In Togo for instance, Brazilian and Indian experts came to support the National Social Protection Strategy and the development of integrated social protection schemes. The project has improved the technical capacities of officials and social security institutions to plan, manage and implement gender sensitive social services and transfers.

The Asian Solidarity Economy Council (ASEC) is a network of advocates and practitioners of the Social and Solidarity Economy which promotes knowledge and good practices around Social and Solidarity Economy and South-South cooperation. Based on participatory processes to define concrete working models of sustainable supply chains it generates proposals for joint projects. The ASEC framework focuses on five dimensions of Social and Solidarity Economy supply chains: socially responsible governance, ethical values, people, ecological conservation, and economic sustainability.

There are over 168 million children in child labour worldwide, 12.5 million of whom are in Latin America and the Caribbean. More than half of all child workers are doing work that puts their health and safety at risk. The Regional Initiative “Latin America and the Caribbean Free of Child Labour” emerged as a catalyst for all efforts already underway in the region to provide short-term responses to address the plight of child labour and declare Latin America and the Caribbean a child-labour free region by 2020.

Microfinance: In partnership with the ILO and institutions from countries of the South, the Organization for Women in Self Employment (WISE) helps support Ethiopian women running micro and small businesses. They provide financial education, business development services, cooperative management training, and innovation challenge fund grants. In 15 years, the ILO-WISE partnership has managed to support 24,000 women and girls, helping them to initiate or expand their micro-enterprise operations.

The Management team of WISE Ethiopia undertook a study visit to India for one month of training at the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) and organized exchange visits with the Self-Employed Women's Association of India (SEWA). WISE Ethiopia also visited Kenya to meet with the Young Women Leadership Institute (YWLI) and a number of NGOs and women self-help groups. Learning still continues with good communication on going in both countries.

The g7+ provides a platform for conflict-affected countries to discuss common humanitarian and development concerns. The network advocates for better international policies to address their needs. In 2013, the network launched the "Fragile to Fragile" cooperation initiative, which included sharing good practices and experiences to promote peaceful societies and to place common issues and goals in international agendas and forums.
The Fragile-to-Fragile interventions that the ILO will support will be identified through an inclusive process of knowledge sharing and promotion at the country, subregional and global levels. Adapting skills training programmes in Somali refugee camps in Ethiopia to the situation of Syrian refugee camps is an example that could be explored.
