International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples - 9 August

The state of indigenous peoples across the world

It is estimated that indigenous peoples constitute some 370 million individuals, representing more than 5,000 distinct peoples living in more than 70 countries. Throughout history, lack of respect for these cultures has led to conflict in far too many cases around the world. The ILO has been working to improve the conditions of indigenous and tribal peoples since the 1920s. Despite progress, the path to an inclusive and fair society is far from over.
