    Representatives of the ILO's Governing Body gathered at a High Level meeting to discuss key issues facing the world of work. Launching the discussion, the ILO's Director-General Guy Ryder spoke about the state of the world's economies and the difficult environment facing enterprises and workers in the real economy. He pointed to growing evidence showing how economic strategies with a central focus on employment can sustain global growth, boost investment and create more and better jobs.

Recalling the recent Lampedusa tragedy, he advocated joint efforts of the European Union, the ILO, governments, workers' and employers' organizations to create more regular migration channels.

    ILO Chief meets former child labourers in Cuiabá - Mato Grosso

    While in Brazil for the III Global Conference on Child Labour (Brasilia, 8-10 October 2013), ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder, met with the beneficiaries of the "Me Encontrei" programme in Cuiabá, the capital city of the Brazilian State of Mato Grosso. The programme, supported by the ILO and local authorities, allows former child labourers to complete their education and receive training to enter the job market.

    Warning that the common goal to eliminate the worst forms of child labour will not be met by 2016 at the current rate of progress, ILO Director General Guy Ryder and Brazilian President Dilma Roussef urged delegates to redouble their efforts at the opening of the Third Global Conference on Child Labour . President Dilma Roussef joined him in calling for the commitment of all nations to eradicate child labour through coordinated and integrated action.

    H.E. Mrs Joyce Banda, President of Malawi pledged "to continue to champion the zero tolerance to child labour in Malawi, and also to intensify programs to eradicate the poverty which is the root cause of this problem". In her first visit to the ILO's International Labour Conference Mrs. Banda also added that "in these times of widespread economic challenges arising from the global financial and economic crisis, the relevance of the ILO today has become glaringly clear". After addressing the plenary sitting, Mrs Banda met with the African delegates of governments, workers' and employers' organizations.

    The 102nd International Labour Conference opened with Dr. Nidal Katamine, Minister of Labour of Jordan and President of the Conference stating that "The financial and economic crises that the world has witnessed since 2008 and the tragedy of mass unemployment that has prevailed in many countries highlights the importance of the ILO and the vital social and economic role it plays globally". Dr. Katamine's opening remarks were followed by ILO's Director-General Guy Ryder's address in which he outlined his vision for tackling the various challenges that impact on workers, enterprises and governments around the world.

    ILO's Director-General visits a "Hello-Work" employment centre in Japan

    On his first trip to Japan as ILO's Director-General, Guy Ryder visited one of the Japanese Public Employment Security (PES) Centres, also known as a "Hello Work" centre, which is part of a network that serves 170,000 people each day nationwide. He met with the staff of their largest "Hello-Work" office in Tokyo and saw how the employment security system worked from the job seeker's point of view.

    On his first official visit to China, ILO's Director-General, Guy Ryder, visited the Beijing Haidian District Employment Centre, which serves 3.2 million job seekers. After meeting with officials of the Beijing Municipal Employment Service Centre and Haidian District Employment Centre, Mr Ryder was given a tour of the centre, and had the opportunity to talk to young job seekers.

    Violence in the world of work is deeply injurious to women and men, and there are obvious consequences for their families and societies, said ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder speaking at the International Women's Day event at the ILO. Mr Ryder stressed how putting an end to gender-based violence at work is integral to the promotion of decent work. Ms Janes Hodges, Director of the Bureau for Gender Equality of the ILO moderated the event; Ms Sarah Fox, Legal Counsel, American Federation of Labour and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and Ms Brenda Cuthbert of the Jamaica Employers' Federation (JEF) participated in the panel debate, while Dr Charlotte Harland Scott of the Republic of Zambia delivered the keynote address.

    ILO Chief calls for immediate action to tackle unemployment

    ILO Director General, Guy Ryder, stressed how "world unemployment is still on the rise, and the feeling of the need to act and change is very much on our mind". While addressing the Eurofound 2013 Forum in Dublin, Ireland, Mr. Ryder went on to say how the social investment package offers an important opportunity to begin to move to a different direction, as people need to be brought back to the labour market. He concluded, it is not acceptable to tolerate levels of youth unemployment which are lived in millions of lives of quiet desperation.

    ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder, visited Thailand as part of his first trip to Asia since taking office in October 2012. He toured the Marine Gold Products Company PP Tan shrimp peeling facility in Samut Sakhon Province, where he met with workers and managers on the factory floor to hear first hand about their working lives.
