World Congress on Safety and Health at Work, Orlando, Florida 18-22 September ILO to release two new studies on safety, food at work

GENEVA (ILO News) - The ILO will be presenting the results of two new studies on the state of occupational health and safety as well as nutrition in the world of work at the upcoming XVIIth World Congress on Safety and Health at Work to be held on 18-22 September in Orlando, Florida.

The ILO report on the state of occupational safety and health is entitled Decent Work - Safe Work, ILO Introductory Report to the XVIIth World Congress on Safety and Health at Work. The new study provides estimates on the annual number of work-related accidents and diseases worldwide as well as a regional breakdown on the effectiveness of reporting and coverage systems.

A separate study, entitled Food at Work: Workplace solutions for malnutrition, obesity and chronic diseases, provides a unique look at workplace eating habits worldwide. It examines how poor nutrition not only impacts worker health, but contributes to a staggering loss of productivity through specific country case histories.

Press releases and video news releases and b-roll will be issued in advance of the conference to the media. The occupational safety and health report will be embargoed for publication on or after 2200 GMT on Saturday 17 September. The press release on Food at Work will be for immediate release.

Press briefings: Press briefings for these studies will be held in the Press Room of the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida, Monday 19 September:

  • Jukka Takala, Director of the ILO's SafeWork Programme will meet conference media to discuss occupational safety and health at 10:30 am.
  • Christopher Wanjek, author of Food at Work, will present his study to the conference media during a press briefing at 1 pm.
