Decent Work and trade and development are mutually reinforcing: in the short run the net employment effects of globalization may be positive or negative, but the long term prospects of efficiency gains should have a positive impact on employment in terms of more jobs and higher wages. In its current form, however, globalization is generating social tensions that are released in unpredictable and damaging ways. Decisive political action is needed to shape a fair globalization offering opportunities for all: even in an economy dominated by global players, people seek assurance that their societies and governments can still provide an adequate level of economic and social security.
