UN ECOSOC reiterates strong support for ILO Decent work Agenda

In a Ministerial declaration of the 2007 high-level segment of ECOSOC adopted on 10 July, the UN body reiterated its strong support for fair globalization and the need to translate growth into reduction of poverty.

The Declaration said "we resolve to make the goals of full and productive employment and decent work for all, including for women and young people, a central objective of relevant national and international policies as well as national development strategies, including poverty reduction strategies, as part of efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals".

In its Coordination Segment the ECOSOC also adopted a resolution on mainstreaming these goals and encouraging all relevant agencies "to collaborate in using, adapting and evaluating the application of the Toolkit developed by the ILO and endorsed by the UN Chief Executives Board." The resolution further requests agencies to work at national level with all relevant stakeholders including governments and representatives of employers and workers on national strategies including ILO Decent Work Country Programmes.
