First AMIN Meeting 11th - 12th December 2007, New Delhi, India
Although recognized as a fundamental human right, social protection still remains a distant dream for many. To this day, only 20% of the population worldwide enjoys adequate social protection. The situation is particularly bleak in Asia which is home to two third of the world's poor thus accounting for most of the excluded groups. In recent years many civil society actors have played a significant role in providing social protection to those who were previously excluded. Micro-insurance is one such innovative solution that has emerged to meet this need. Since 2003, the ILO/STEP Programme is carrying out national inventories, on micro insurance initiatives in Asia. The Asia Micro Insurance Network (AMIN) brings together over 400 such schemes from 8 Asian countries insuring over 30 million people all over Asia with the aim of joining local initiatives in order to advocate and move towards national solidarity systems. The objectives of this first meeting is to bring together AMIN permanent members in order to discuss the functioning and strategy of the association, and to interact and learn from the different local and global experiences of all the actors that will be present.
