Evolving employment challenges in the Basque Country

This seminar focused on the socio-economic transformation of the Basque Country since the eighties and how the employment challenges during this period have evolved. Strategies adopted during the eighties and until the beginning of the century were presented. The presentation also highlighted the main challenges that the country has faced over the last ten years due to demographic and automation trends.

Biography: Mari Jose Aranguren
Mari Jose Aranguren is the General Director of Orkestra - the Basque Institute of Competitiveness - and Professor of Economics at the Deusto University. She is a recognized expert in the area of competitiveness and territorial strategies, clusters and networks and in the analysis and evaluation of policies, having published several books and articles in specialised national and international journals of impact. In 2016, she received an award for her trajectory and her contributions to territorial competitiveness from the Institute of Strategy and Competitiveness of the University of Harvard. From 2014 to 2016 Mari Jose was a member of the Advisory Group for the European Commission as part of the Horizon 2020 programme, in the Societal Challenge 6 ‘Europe in a changing world – Inclusive, Innovative and Reflective Societies’ as well as in the challenge of ‘Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation’.
