A Market Systems Analysis of the Edible Oils Sector in Amhara, Ethiopia

ILO ProAgro Ethiopia –‘Promotion of Decent Work in Agribusiness’ project funded by the BMZ Special Initiative on Training and Job Creation, conducted a market systems analysis (MSAs) of the edible oils sector in the Amhara region.

The edible oils sector can be characterised as largely uncompetitive, but with considerable government interest in developing domestic value-addition opportunities. Despite the lack of competitiveness, Amhara is now primed to become a key processing centre for edible oils – it has recently had three multi-million dollar processing investments.

This analysis has flagged that low farm productivity and production, poor factory and farm working conditions, and poor coordination from primary cooperatives, cooperative unions and trade unions are the three most pressing issues. Key practical, evidence-informed interventions have been identified to enhance market and SME growth and create more and better jobs.
