Three years after the global economic crisis devastated markets, wiped out savings, ruined businesses and disrupted the lives of billions of working people, the International Labour Organization’s annual report on global employment has concluded that the deep consequences of the crisis are continuing into 2012. The report also calls for a global response to create hundreds of millions of new, productive jobs in the next ten years.

A recent BBC World Service survey pointed to unemployment as the world's fastest-rising concern. The ILO's Executive Director of Employment, José Manuel Salazar, was interviewed at the start of BBC World TV's week-long focus on the issue of global youth unemployment. He explained why young people are disproportionately hit by unemployment and the social consequences for young people's long-term work prospects.

Policy makers at both the national and international level are increasingly looking for new strategies to promote more and better employment outcomes in a globalizing world. At a workshop at the ILO in June 2011, leading academics gathered to discuss latest findings on the relationship between globalization and labour markets and their impact for policy design. In this video, participating academics including Elhanan Helpman (Harvard), David Autor (MIT), and Margaret McMillan (Tufts U and IFPRI), briefly summarize their work and explain its policy implications.The workshop was sponsored jointly by ILO, World Bank, CESifo, and EFIGE.

Alternatives to Migration: Decent Jobs for Filipino Youth, provides an overview of the employment and migration challenges of Filipino youth from ages 15-24 years old. It then presents solutions to the problems by explaining what the joint programme is all about and outlining the outcome and outputs. It also presents the United Nations Country Team participating agencies, the government implementing partners, and what the programme aims to achieve. The joint programme is funded by the Government of Spain through the Millennium Development Goal Achievement Fund.
