The Government of Mauritius has adopted a sustainable development framework called “Maurice, Ile Durable” and aims to be a model of sustainable development for Small Island Developing States. This synthesis report presents an overview of four studies carried out in Mauritius in 2011-2012 with support from the ILO Green Jobs Programme. Objetive of the studies was to explore the green jobs opportunities within the “Maurice Ile Durable” framework.

The report summarizes the findings of a study on the challenges and opportunities for small business development and decent job creation in the waste management sector. Based on research conducted in three municipalities of Free State, South Africa, the report highlights the vulnerable situation of waste pickers and makes recommendations for better waste management. The research was commissioned by the ILO Free State SME Development Initiative and conducted by the University of Western Cape and the University of Johannesburg.

By identifying successful experiences of social dialogue on environmental policy, the report at hand presents practices, challenges and opportunities in developing and strengthening an efficient social dialogue on environmental issues at national, supranational, subnational and sectoral level. The report, produced with the support of Sustainlabour, intends to promote a stronger interaction among governments, workers’ and employers’ organizations in an increasingly challenging area for the world of work: environment, green economy and sustainable development.
