Minimum wage

Minimum wage is the minimum pecuniary ammount due and directly paid by the employer to every worker, including rural workers, without distinction of sex, by regular day of work, able to satisfy in each time and region of the Country, normal needs such as alimentation, accomodation, dressing, hygiene and transportation. (Salário mínimo é a contraprestação mínima devida e paga diretamente pelo empregador a todo trabalhador, inclusive ao trabalhador rural, sem distinção de sexo, por dia normal de serviço, e capaz de satisfazer, em determinada época e região do País, as suas necessidades normais de alimentação, habitação, vestuário, higiene e transporte.)

Government decides alone

From 2012 until 2015 the minimum wage will be decided by the Government (more specifically the Executive Power) and established by the Decree, determining the monthly, daily and hourly ammount for the minimum wage.

Scope

The Federal Constitution defines the minimum wage as the lowest pay that any worker can receive. It applies to all workers.
Additionally, federal acts, collective agreements, or, in the absence of such, state level legislation can provide for "wage floors" not lower than the federal minimum wage for specific groups of workers.
