Le titre I est consacré à la définition du navire, à sa nationalité, son immatriculation et aux papiers de bord. Le titre V contient des dispositions visant à réglementer le travail maritime notamment en ce qui concerne le contrat d'engagement du marin, les obligations du marin et de l'armateur, les avances et les rétentions sur les salaires des marins, la protection de la santé des marins, le rapatriement et la fin du contrat d'engagement. Les autres titres concernent les privilèges, les hypothèques et la saisie, les propriétaires du navire et les armateurs, le capitaine, l'affrêtement et le contrat de transport, les risques de mer, les contrats à la grosse et les assurances.
