Solomon Islands Independence Order 1978 (No. 783 of 1978). Adoption: 1978-05-31 | Date of entry into force: 1978-07-07 | SLB-1978-C-44008 Solomon Islands independence is set for 7 July 1978. Existing laws shall continue to have effect until modified in accordance with the Constitution (s. 5). The Schedule provides the Constitution. Chapter I provides protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, including the protection of the freedom of expression, conscience, assembly and association, as well as protection from inhuman treatment, slavery, forced labour, and discrimination on the grounds of race and sex. Specified rights may not be derogated from during a state of emergency. Chapter III regulates citizenship; Chapter IV the functions of the Governor General; Chapter V the Executive; and Chapter VI the legislature. The legal system is established in Chapter VII. Chapter VIII provides a Leadership Code, a code of ethics for public servants. Chapter IX establishes the post of an ombudsman. Schedule 3 extends the applicability of British law unless it is in violation of the Constitution or customary law.
