    Comprised of 9 Parts and 284 sections. Reforms the electoral system by setting up a "Mixed Member Proportional" electoral system to replace the Westminster derived "first past the post" system. Half of the 120 members of Parliament are elected by the "first past the post" method and half by way of a system of proportional representation. Sections 45 and 76-79 provide for special Maori representation in Parliament. The Act also establishes an Electoral Commission and repeals the Electoral Act of 1956.     An Act to consolidate and amend the Race Relations Act 1971 and the Human Rights Commission Act 1977 and to provide better protection of human rights in New Zealand in general accordance with United Nations Covenants or Conventions on Human Rights

    The Human Rights Act 1993 protects people in New Zealand from discrimination in a number of areas of life. Discrimination occurs when a person is treated unfairly or less favourably than another person in the same or similar circumstances. The Human Rights Act lists the areas and grounds where discrimination is unlawful and also some exemptions or exclusions.     The Human Rights Amendment Act 2001 made significant changes to the Human Rights Act 1993. The Human Rights Act comprises eight parts.

    New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 (1990 No. 109). - Act on-line

    The New Zealand Bill of Rights Act places limits on the actions of those in government (including government departments, the judiciary, state-owned enterprises and local authorities) that interfere with the rights of individuals. The Bill of Rights Act also protects the rights of non-natural persons, for example, companies and incorporated societies.

    All new legislation is examined to see if it is consistent with the rights and freedoms affirmed by the Bill of Rights Act. If there are any inconsistencies, then the government is required to provide a justification for the limits placed on these rights. The Attorney-General must report any inconsistencies with the Bill of Rights Act to Parliament when the legislation is introduced.

    Introduces amendments to the State-Owned Enterprises Act 1986 concerning shareholding, transfer of Crown assets and liabilities, transfer of land, etc. In a Schedule, lists a series of repeals in other Acts consequential upon provisions of the 1986 Act.

    These amendments to the Agricultural Workers Act 1977 (LS 1977 - NZ 1) repeal its Parts II (classes of agricultural workers), III (agricultural tribunal) and IV (settlement of disputes), along with its First Schedule. Henceforth, those matters are to be dealt with under the Industrial Relations Act 1987 (No. 77). This amendment Act also repeals s. 9 of the Agricultural Workers Act, ss. 2, 3 and 5 of, and the Schedule to, the Agricultural Workers Amendment Act 1977, and the Agricultural Workers Amendments Acts of 1979, 1980, 1982, 1984 and 1985. It also revokes the Industrial Relations Amendment Act Commencement Order 1978 (S.R. 1978/99) and the Agricultural Workers (Workers' Organisation Membership) Regulation 1985 (S.R. 1985/155). Finally, the amendments revise s. 2 (definition of "worker" and "employer") and ss. 6(l)(f), 59 and 60 (minor changes) of the Agricultural Workers Act.

    Contains amendments to the Fire Service Act 1975 and the State Services Conditions of Employment Act 1977 occasioned by the enactment of the Labour Relations Act 1987 (LS 1987 - NZ 1). The amendments deal in particular with union elections, membership clauses and jurisdiction of the Labour Court.

    This Act was passed to promote the conservation of New Zealand's natural and historic resources, and for that purpose to establish a Department of Conservation.

    Part I of the Act contains a statement of principles, including the operation as a successful business as being the main objective of every State enterprise. To this end, it shall be "(a) as profitable and efficient as comparable businesses that are not owned by the Crown; and (b) a good employer; and (c) an organisation that exhibits a sense of social responsibility..." (s. 4(1)). A "good employer" is defined as an employer whose personnel policy ensures the fair and proper treatment of employees, including good and safe working conditions, an equal opportunities employment programme, the impartial selection of suitably qualified persons for employment, and opportunities for the enhancement of the abilities of individual employees (s. 4(2)). Part II of the Act embraces provisions on the formation and ownership of new state enterprises. Part III governs accountability and Part IV contains miscellaneous provisions. The Act includes six Schedules covering, inter alia, repeals of other enactments and a list of state enterprises.

    Enumerates the powers of the sovereign (and the governor general as his representative) the executive (Ministers of the Crown and Executive Council) and the legislature (House of Representatives, Parliament). Proclaims the legislative independence of New Zealand from the United Kingdom. Replaces the British enactments on the basis of which legislative independence was established (the New Zealand Constitution Act 1852, the Statute of Westminster 1931, and the New Zealand Constitution (Amendment) Act 1947).
