Refers questions regarding trade union registration to the "appropriate court", and adds a proviso to s. 50A stipulating that wage deductions for trade union membership dues be subject to the insertion of "no strike" and "no lock-out" clauses in collective bargaining agreements. Also amends the definition of "member of trade union".

Adoption: 1996-01-05 | Date of entry into force: 1996-01-05 | NGA-1996-R-45612 Amends provisions of the Trade Unions Act by requiring employers to make deductions from the wages of every worker who is eligible to be a member of specified trade unions. These deductions shall be payable to the trade union, which in turn shall contribute 10 per cent of the contributions to the Central Labour Organisation. Lists labour unions which shall be officially registered with the Central Labour Organisation. Prohibits the question as to the validity of any act taken by a person or authority under the Trade Unions Act to be entertained by any court or tribunal.

Contains a new list of registered and recognised trade unions and specifies which may be affiliated to the Central Labour Organisation. Also amends s. 5 of the Labour Act 1974 (LS 1974 - Nig. 1) by forbidding deductions, except on a voluntary basis, from wages and salaries of senior employees as contributions to trade unions; other workers may opt out of the deductions system.

Trade Unions Act (Chapter 437), as amended. Adoption: 1973-11-01 | Date of entry into force: 1973-11-01 | NGA-1973-L-42153 Provides comprehensive legislation on trade unions. Part I governs the registration of trade unions. Members of the Nigerian armed forces, customs and prison services, Central Bank, and certain other government bodies are prohibited from forming unions, although they may set up joint consultative committees (s. 11). Section 15 prohibits the use of trade union funds for lending political support to elected officials. Part II governs federations of trade unions. Part III establishes and regulates a Central Labour Organisation, which has the function of educating and informing trade unions, representing their collective interests to the government, and, if requested, participating in collective bargaining. Part IV regulates accounts and returns of registered bodies. Part V contains miscellaneous and general provisions, including the right to peacefully picket (s. 42).
