    Changes the name of the law to "Law on maternity and sickness insurance". Amends the aim of the law so as to regulate the order of assignment, calculation and payment of state social insurance benefits in cases of insurance provided in this law, as well as to determine persons eligible for the benefits.

    Regulates public relationships in medical treatment in order to ensure qualified prevention and diagnosis of diseases and injuries, as well as qualified medical treatment and rehabilitation of patients. Gives, inter alia, legal definitions of several medical professions and sets up basic regulatory basis for their activities.

    Repeals Cabinet Regulation On Medical Treatment (Latvijas Republikas Saeimas un Ministru Kabineta Ziotjs, 1997, No. 1; 2005, No. 18; 2006, No. 2).

    Also implements Council Directive 93/42/EEC of 14 June 1993 concerning medical devices.
