The functions and powers of the National Human Rights Commission include, inter alia, inquiring into complaints of human rights violations by public servants; examining the conditions of jail inmates; reviewing safeguards provided in the Constitution or other laws for protection of human rights; promoting awareness of human rights and enabling non-governmental efforts for the promotion of human rights. The State Human Rights Commissions are patterned after the National Commission, but have a regional specificity in their constitution and range of functioning.
