Requires employers to ensure seafarers have at least the specified minimum hours of rest. Also requires records to be kept of seafarers' daily hours of rest. Prohibits employment on a ship of a person under 16 years of age, and establishes seafarers' entitlement to annual leave.

Merchant Shipping (Hours of Work) Regulations 1995 (No. 157 of 1995) Adoption: 1995-01-20 | Date of entry into force: 1995-02-28 | GBR-1995-R-40072 Gives effect in part to the Merchant Shipping (Minimum Standards) Convention 1976 (International Labour Organisation Convention No. 147) laid before Parliament on 24 April 1978 and ratified by the United Kingdom and in force internationally, which requires that safety standards regarding hours of work be established. These Regulations place general duties on operators, employers and masters of United Kingdom sea-going merchant ships (excluding fishing vessels and pleasure craft) to ensure that masters and seamen do not work more hours than are safe for the ship.
