Labour Contracts Act, (No. 12 of 1983) Cap. 89:04. - Adoption: 1983-06-06 | DMA-1983-L-55203 Regulates basic labour contracts and related matters. Regulates where the act does not apply which includes persons employed by the state. Legislates that the employer is to prepare the labour contract at least fourteen days prior to the commencement of employment. Establishes the required contents of labour contracts. Obliges employees to include provision regarding maternity leave for female employees. Declares that contracts are to be considered void if they violate industrial agreements. Grants anyone of eighteen years or more with the right to enter into a labour contract. States that a person under the age of eighteen may enter into a labour contract only with parental consent. Provides for the amendment of contracts and sets penalties for offences. The Schedule includes the required contents of a basic labour contract. This includes inter alia, the responsibilities of employers and employees, provision concerning hours, wages, overtime and holidays, annual vacation leave, termination of employment, rights of appeal, training and probationary periods.
