Education Act (No. 11 of 1997). - Adoption: 1997-11-13 | DMA-1997-L-48075 Comprehensive legislation governing the education system. Compulsory school age shall be between 5 and 16 years. S. 14 provides the right to education. S. 46 make it an offence to employ a person of school age during the school year; students over 14 years of age may be employed during vacations or within vocational training programmes. Part VI covers vocational training. Establishes a Technical and Vocational Education and Training Council to oversee vocational training schemes. Part VII sets forth duties and responsibilities of teachers and principals. Inter alia, provides teachers the right to an "adequate working environment", protection from harm, and compensation for injury or loss incurred during the execution of duties. S. 49 allows administration of corporal punishment in specified circumstances. Repeals the Education Ordinance (Cap. 103).
