    Approved by the South Australian Occupational Health and Safety Commission under subsection 63(1) of the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act, 1986. This comprehensive Code, to be read in conjunction with the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare (Asbestos) Regulations, applies to all work involving the use or handling of materials which consist of or contain asbestos, including not only the cutting, grinding, sawing, drilling or any other processing of such materials but also work in the vacinity of asbestos where asbestos fibres may be released into the air. The Code provides for definitions; consultation; assessment; monitoring; management of installed asbestos; exposure control; safe work practices; respiratory protective equipment; protective clothing; cleanliness, housekeeping and waste disposal; changing rooms and washing facilities; eating, drinking and smoking; health surveillance; instruction and training; and employees' duties. Three appendices cover work with asbestos cement; handling and repair of asbestos-based friction materials; and maintenance work near asbestos insulation.

    The aims of the Act include, inter alia, ensuring that the services provided to persons with disabilities enable them to have increased independence, employment opportunities and integration in the community and to benefit from comprehensive rehabilitation services. Accordingly, the Act replaces provisions of the Handicapped Persons Assistance Act 1974 and of Part VII of the Social Security Act 1947 with provisions that are more flexible and more responsive to the needs and aspirations of persons with disabilities (s. 3). Part II of the Act governs funding of services, including competitive employment training, placement services and supported employment services. Part III concerns the provision of rehabilitation services by the Commonwealth (s. 24 permits a training allowance to be paid in addition to a rehabilitation allowance under defined conditions).
