The Act consists of 17 sections: Short title (sect. 1); Interpretation (sect. 2); Application of Act (sect. 3); Appointment of officers (sect. 4); Powers of officers (sect. 5); Prohibition of commercial fishing, etc. without a boat licence (sect. 6); Prohibition of commercial fishing without a personal licence (sect. 7); Prohibition of certain scientific or research operations without a permit (sect. 8); Prohibition of export of fish, etc. without a licence (sect. 9); Offences penalties (sect. 10); Use of poisons or explosives (sect. 11); Inspection, seizure forfeit use of nets (sect. 12); Regulations (sect. 13); Marine reserve (sect. 14); Penalty for breach of regulations (sect. 15); Protection of officers agents from personal liability (sect. 16); Certificate as to identity or species of fish to be admissable (17).
The Act shall extend to the coastal waters within the fishing limits of Belize. The Minister may, by Order in the Official Gazette, extend the application of this Act to inland waters (sect. 3). Powers of Fishery Officers appointed by the Minister are outlined in section 4.The Minister may, where he considers that extraordinary measures are necessary, by Order published in the Gazette, declare any area within the fishing limits of Belize and as appropriate any adjacent surrounding land, to be a marine reserve to afford special protection to the aquatic flora and fauna of such areas and to protect and preserve the natural breeding grounds and habitats of aquatic life and for other purposes.
